Of course … if you’re the type who works outside, you could probably build your own pair of sawhorses. But I’m sure you have more important things to do with your time. Leave the building to us. Seriously, if a cart like this had already existed somewhere in the market, I would’ve bought 3 or 4 of them. But I never found anything quite like it. So I went ahead and built my own. And let me just say … I use them all the time and they have saved my back on several occasions.

As you’ll see on other pages of this site, we provide raised garden beds in Houston and surrounding areas. As you can imagine, they’re heavy and it’s a challenge to mobilize them.

When I first started delivering them years ago, I didn’t have the utility trailer that I have now. I had to rely on a guy who had a truck. Not only did I need his truck, but I also needed him. He would help me lift up the heavy garden beds and carry them to wherever they needed to go. This is typically a long walk from a client’s driveway to their backyard.

It didn’t take long for me to realize I needed a solution.

Heavy Duty 4 Wheel Dolly Cart with 8-Inch Wheels

Of course, there are many carts and dollies on the market. I would’ve purchased any one of those, but none of them had all the features I needed. Those exact features now come standard with our heavy duty 4 wheel dolly. These include 8-inch rubber wheels that swivel, a strong platform with grip tape that helps to prevent your heavy object from sliding off the platform.

The resulting dolly I designed and built made everything easier. I no longer needed anyone’s help delivering heavy garden beds. I simply lift one end, slide the dolly underneath and then I do the same thing at the other end. Sometimes I also clamp them to the piece, as shown in the photo above. Works like a charm. If these dollies make my job easier in this specific application, I’m sure there’s a countless number of other applications where they can be used.

8-Inch Swiveling Rubber Wheels

Big swiveling wheels are essential. I need these dollies to easy go over pavers, driveway edges, roots, debris and generally uneven ground. A big oak tree regularly drops acorns on our driveway, for example. They’re everywhere! As you can imagine, acorns are problematic for those little dollies you’ll find at Harbor Freight and Home Depot. Their wheels are less than 3 inches high. Therefore, they jam and get stuck on acorns and other debris instead of going over it.

The big 8-inch wheels on our dollies go over acorns as if they aren’t even there! And since these big casters also swivel, they have no trouble pivoting or going in any direction. As each of the four caster wheels is rating to carry 280 lbs each, the overall capacity of our dolly is more than 1,100 lbs!

Thick, Strong Platform

Equally as important as the casters below, the upper platform of our dolly is built rigidly strong with thick material. The four boards that comprise the platform overlap one another with incredibly strong half-lap joints. The 1-1/2″ thickness of the platform enables the dolly to support all of the 1,100+ pound combined capacity of the four wheels.

Furthermore, we put a grippy material on top of the platform to reduce the possibility of the object slipping off.

Lead time for these 4-wheel heavy duty carts is 2 to 3 weeks. When placing the order, please specify if you’d like all four wheels on your cart to swivel or if you’d like them rigid, which means they’ll go only forward and backwards.

The James’ planter box, on the other hand, presents your plants and flowers waist high so that you and your visitors can see them up close. Choose the casters option to easily wheel the boxes around.

James’ Barrier Planter Box

Its standard width is 12″. Its standard height is around 32″. The default material option for this product is untreated cedar wood which is just over 1/2″ thick.

Choose the exterior seal option and we’ll apply a clear coat of Thompson’s Water Seal to the walls before shipping it to you. This protects the wood’s surface from harsh outdoor elements and will prolong the pinkish / golden color of the cedar. Without the seal, the cedar will gradually transition to a grayish color, which has its own charm and beauty.

These boxes will arrive carefully packaged at your home and will include simple instructions for assembly. Your materials package will also include fasteners. All you’ll need to assemble is a screwdriver or drill … and maybe an extra pair of hands.

Interior Specifications

On the inside, the floor of this garden box hovers around the middle section. You will have around 10 to 11 inches of interior depth for your soil. This means you won’t need a ton of soil to fill up the box. However, if you need more or less depth for your boxes, please let us know when you checkout.

Available with custom dimensions and with various add-on features, these sturdy-build beds solve a number of problems. They make gardening easier. The prices on this listing are for the standard versions of our beds at commonly requested dimensions.

Custom options include a deeper bed, a protective water seal, protective netting and a wider ledge around the bed’s perimeter. Details on all of these options are below.

Cedar Elevated Garden Bed

In addition to the benefit of planting, watering and harvesting at a comfortable height, our cedar elevated garden beds are high enough to keep most pets and pests out of your garden.

We construct the walls, floor, legs and upper ledge of our elevated garden beds with untreated cedar wood. The supporting structure below the floorboards is built with Douglas fir. Both are rot-resistant woods which hold up well over time in fluctuating weather.

Interior Depth

As you’ll see on several of the photos of this listing, most of our elevated beds have three horizontal boards composing its walls. On the inside, these beds have around 12 inches of interior depth for soil.

Adding another level of boards around the perimeter of the walls will increase the interior depth to around 17 inches:

Removable slats

Cedar slats rest atop the sturdy structure to form the floor of the garden bed. Your soil will rest directly on top of this floor. Our standard practice is to provide these slats and leave them unfastened at the bottom of the bed. This allows the client to establish the spacing between the slats that they prefer. This also allows the slats to expand and contract without splitting.

Ledge Around the Perimeter

We build the upper ledge of our garden beds with cedar boards that are 1-inch thick and 4.5″ wide. It conveniently holds drinks, tools and other items while you work in your garden.

Our original planter box was Gheorghe’s Cedar Garden Box. We sold hundreds of these when we first got started in the garden box business. We still sell many of them today.

Over time, however, the input and requests we received from customers led to some evolving features. The resulting box style with these new features became even more popular than the original box.

Joseph’s Cedar Planter Box

The most obvious difference between the two styles is that the Joseph box has a simpler, cleaner look on its exterior. The vertical pieces which hold the walls together are inside the box instead of on the outside. Also, the Joseph box has 3-inch legs which keeps the floor of the box off the ground. This allows for air circulation beneath the box floor. This is great for the roots.

This box is carefully built by hand and lightly sanded for a clean, simple look.

floor boards of the box have 1/8″ gap between them to allow for water drainage.

We leave 1/8″ gaps between the boards at the bottom of the box for water drainage. If you would like some holes drilled through the box floor for additional drainage, be sure to check that option.

This easy-to-carry, lightweight box is easy to move around when it’s time for potting or harvesting.

The Monique Cedar Herb Garden Box arrives to your door already assembled. Just take it out of its packaging and start filling it with soil with no delay.

Each Monique is carefully built by hand with rot-resistant cedar wood. Cedar also repels many of the bugs that would like to eat the produce you’re growing. Each piece is held together with galvanized fasteners.

How deep does the soil need to be for herbs?

Herbs are pretty adaptable. So long as they get enough water, sunshine and nutrients, herbs will grow in a variety of environments. 3 to 12 inches is common for most shallow herbs. The standard depth for soil in this standard planter box is 5 inches. We will soon have these available with varying lengths and depths.

Yes, that’s basically true. But it turns out there’s a number of other factors and decisions to be made when choosing a raised garden bed. Click here to read a post where we discuss those issues at length.

After doing your research, however, you’ll eventually arrive to one of a few preferences. You can go the economical route with less-expensive material or thinner boards. Or you can choose to pay a little more for thicker lumber on your raised beds…ensuring that they last for many years. We make both types of raised beds, just so you know.

But the latter option is what you’re seeing here in our raised garden bed kit. Available in cedar or Douglas fir, these beds are super sturdy and built to last for years.

Cedar Raised Garden Bed Kit

In the corners, we interlock the ends of the boards for additional strength and stability. Four heavy-duty lag bolts hold them in place.

Looks don’t matter to everyone. We understand that some people just want to grow their veggies and they’re not too concerned with appearances. But we prepare our classic raised garden beds so that they’re aesthetically pleasing. We cut a 45° angle on the long edge of each board to create clean, beautiful lines. These beds look great wherever you put them…especially when you have two or more of them together.
